Phonics

One of the most wonderful gifts we can give children is the ability to read. We use the Read Write inc phonics programme to teach the children so that they learn to read quickly. Our highly skilled staff teach the programme with fidelity ensuring that all children make the best start at our school. The phonics programme is integral to our reading and writing offer.

When your child is starting their reading journey, they are placed into reading groups which are delivered by our 'reading teachers'. All the staff in the school have responsibility for teaching groups of children to read which is based on regular assessments. Your child's reading teacher may not always be their regular class teachers. However, we ensure that there are continuous discussions amongst staff to ensure that the progress a child is making is shared with all relevant parties. If you wish to find out more about your child's progress in phonics and reading, please speak to their class teacher. They will always be there to offer advice and support.

The Read Write inc programme follows a very specific routine with expectations of what your child should be achieving by specific times of the year. This can be seen below.  Your child will come home with a book that reflects what they are being taught in school so that they can practise at home. They will also be able to take home a 'book bag book' which provides additional opportunity to practise the words they have been taught within the context of another story.
